Packing for the desert is not like packing for the beach. On a Dubai desert safari you will climb dunes, ride a camel, sit on cushions at a Bedouin-style camp and watch the sun drop behind red sand — and what you wear decides how comfortable you feel through all of it. The good news is that you do not need special gear. A few sensible choices from your normal holiday wardrobe will see you through the whole evening, from the first dune drive to the last show under the stars.
The golden rule
Light, loose and breathable is the golden rule. Cotton and linen let your skin breathe when the afternoon sun is still warm, and a relaxed fit means you can move freely on the dune drive and in and out of the 4×4. At the camp, a little coverage goes a long way: tops that cover the shoulders and shorts or trousers that reach the knee are a respectful choice around the shared majlis seating, and they also protect your skin from sun and wind-blown sand.
Shoes matter more than outfits
If you remember one thing, make it this: wear closed shoes or trainers. Desert sand gets everywhere, it heats up in the afternoon sun, and walking up a soft dune in flip-flops is harder work than it looks. Trainers or sturdy sandals with a back strap keep your footing secure on the slopes and on the sandboard. Heels, wedges and smooth-soled dress shoes are best left at the hotel — you will thank yourself at the sunset photo stop.
Sun and sand protection
The desert sun is honest and strong, even late in the day. Sunglasses are essential, a hat or cap keeps the glare off during the dune drive, and sunscreen applied before pick-up saves you remembering it later. A light scarf or shawl is the local traveller’s secret weapon: it shades your neck, keeps wind-blown sand off your face during the drive, and doubles as an extra layer when the evening cools.
Evenings by season
From October to April, bring a light jacket or fleece. The desert cools surprisingly fast once the sun sets, and the open-air camp can feel chilly by dinner time, especially for children. In the summer months the heat lingers into the night, so dress as lightly as you comfortably can — but keep shoulders and knees covered for the sun and the camp rather than dressing for the beach.
Small extras that help
A hair tie for long hair, a zip pocket or small pouch to keep sand out of your phone, and minimal jewellery you would not mind losing complete the list. Everything else — water, soft drinks, dinner and the entertainment — is waiting for you at camp.
